The influence of abdominal surgery (partial hepatectomy) on bone status in male Wistar rats

Abstract

We study effect of abdominal surgery on bone metabolic turnover and bone biomechanical properties. Male Wistar rats were in 2 groups.

Group KON was intact, group OPE was 18 hours after abdominal surgery (partial hepatectomy). Leptin, triglycerides, glucose and insulin were estimated in sera.

Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured. Femurs were controlled broken.

Bone homogenate was analyzed for osteocalcin, procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP) and carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX). No differences between groups in BMD (spine p=0.623; tail p = 0.120; femur p = 0.143), in femur size (thickness) and strength needed for femur diaphysis (p = 0.171) and neck fracture (p = 0.644).

Triglycerides decreased (p { 0.001), glucose increased (p { 0.001) in OPE group. Osteocalcin (p = 0.033) increased, but PINP and CTX decreased (p = 0.031; p = 0.010) in OPE group.

Abdominal surgery in short time not influenced BMD, bone fractures, but influenced bone metabolic turnover.
