Abstract
This article presents some findings from a qualitative research for the international project Images and Identity: Improving Citizenship Education through Digital Art: www.image-identity.eu.The project aimed to generate discussion around Art, Identity and Citizenship issues across six European countries and to produce a web-based learning and curriculum materials. The Czech action research team understands identity as a multimodal, socio-cultural process.
Exploring multiple personal and cultural identities in art lessons does not conflict with the artistic ideals of integrity and authenticity. "European" identity revealing its roots in a concept of "personal freedom" was a ubiquitous hidden phenomenon informing curriculum experiments combining citizenship and art.
