The History of Education on the Territory of the Czech Republic

Abstract

This article briefly outlines the development of formal education on the territory of the Czech Republic from 1774, when learning how to read and write was made compulsory by law. It can be observed from the end of the 19th century on the basis of the share of the population that obtained higher than basic education.

The article draws on education statistics (the number of students at individual types of school) and population censuses (the size of the literate population or the highest attained level of education).
