Abstract

This study deals with the Arab revolutions of 2011. It focuses on the prosperity deficit and particularly the democracy deficit.

The democracy deficit is described in light of international comparisons as well as with respect to the composition of the power elite. The internal components and functions of the power elite often lead to its multifaceted alienation from the rest of society (not only due to aspects of power and wealth, but also to aspects of generation, lifestyle, culture, religion, region or tribe).
