HOW TO BUILD A HOUSE IN SUBSTANTIVE AREA AND IN THE "MIDDLEGROUND"?

Abstract

In article published in 1965 "Discovery of Substantive Theory: A Basic Strategy Underlying Qualitative Research", the authors Anselm Strauss and Barney Glaser present qualitative method as inherently valuable and not being a mere prelude to quantitative research. This paper deals with the common conceptual space that the above mentioned "Substantive Theory" shares with theorizing related to the "middleground" in art.

The latter was pointed out by artist Oskar Schlemmer during his years in Bauhaus (1920-29). Both Glaser and Strauss and Schlemmer are classical today and both offer significant implications for present day research and art education.

The paper presents these implications in their synergy.
