Abstract

The Eurasian Elk (Alces alces alces) belongs among the animals, whose population - after previous extermination - currently expands in the Czech Republic. Two small populations of the Elk emerged in the Southern Bohemia during the second half of the 20th century; both of them have existed ever since.

However, problems (e.g. vehicle collisions or forest damages) emerge through the presence of such a big animal in the nature. Therefore, the species definitely requires extended protection; education of the public towards tolerance for the elk in their vicinity.
