The GEOBIBLINE Database and a Comparison with Geographical Databases Abroad

Publication |
2012

Abstract

The objective of the article is to describe the methods for creating the GEOBIBLINE database and to compare the database with similar products in the field. Traditional databases were created through methodical bibliographic work usually carried out by a single institution, or in recent decades by libraries contributing to union catalogues.

Due to a unique method of collaboration among 20 Czech special libraries, a geographical database was created quickly (in four years). The database contains bibliographic records for Czech-related geographical documents, originally for the 20th century.

In connection work on the TEMAP project, the time frame was expanded to the infancy of book printing (from 1450 onwards). The typology of the excerpted documents is broad and includes grey literature.

Objects (maps, articles, periodical covers), the URL addresses of full texts and links to Google Books are attached to the records. The database is compared with a Polish, German and U.S. subject database.

The subject structure of the databases was analysed using specialised subject headings that had been identified. The values for the most frequently used headings are comparable on the international level and demonstrate specific trends in the field.

Due to automated data imports and its connection to a new project for compiling map collections (TEMAP), GEOBIBLINE is guaranteed to have sustainable development.
