Abstract
Drawing in particular on Antoine Berman's Pour une critique des traductions: John Donne, the article traces some basic differences between Berman's approach to the study of translations to that of the Tel Aviv school, illustrates his affinity with the translation tradition of German Romanticism and presents in brief the main stages of his proposed method for translation criticism, which reflects his middle-ground position between source-oriented and target-oriented translation theorists.
