This paper investigates the circumstances and implications of power relations in the process of cross-cultural literary mediation in terms of the distribution of roles in the translation process. Based on a case study of Scandinavian-Czech literary translation in 1890-1950, it provides an analysis of the "sets of roles" individual translators would typically have in the changing cultural, social and political environments of the era.

The paper suggests that there is a direct proportion between the power and influence individual translators potentially have and the pressure put on them in order to restrict their personal power and influence.
