The study describes increased responsiveness of colonic epithelium to carbachol after 3 days of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) administration. DSS was used to induce colitis.

The increase was sensitive to the inhibition of enteric nervous system (by tetrodotoxin) and prostaglandins production (by indomethacin). These results demonstrate that hyporesponsiveness observed in inflamed colon is likely preceded by overstimulation of the ion transport.
