The main contribution of J. E.
Purkyně to plant physiology, the book De cellulis antherarum fibrosis..., contains several original contributions - e. g. anther morphology, the concept of fibrous cells and the definition of "endothecium". Generally, Purkyně's work on plants, though inconspicuous, shows him as not only an animal physiologist and histologist, but also as a scientist with broader interest: to understand the basic principles of life through the relation between the structure and function of living bodies.
