Concept of competence and education

Abstract

The concept of competence belongs to basic concepts of contemporary discussion in educational sciences, This concept is not unambiguous, it involves a number of definitions and meanings, and it is contextconditioned. This concept provokes controversial discussion in educational research.

However, we cannot ignore this concept, e.g. in Germany there is a project "Competence models to comprehending individual educational results and evaluating educational processes". The question remains how "the competances" of respective school subjects are influenced (reduced) by different projects e.g.

PISA. A discussion is frequently raised whether education is more than the acquisition of competences or the acquisition of mere functional knowledge and skills.

Education should be "detached" from competences, from measurements of performance, at least in some of itsdimensions. The autor focused especially on the interpretation of this concept in Czech and german educational literature.
