Abstract

To determine the degree of depression, quality of life and eating behavior in patients with diabetes attending an intervention programme. Significant differences were demonstrated between male and female patients in the degree of depression and quality of life. The score of depression was significantly higher in women with diabetes compared with men; the score of quality of life was lower in women at baseline, 12 weeks of diet intervention and 24 weeks (second 12 weeks of diet were combined with aerobic exercise). Results show that the impact of diabetes and obesity as chronic somatic diseases on psychological experience is more marked in women.

Women with diabetes tended to experience significantly higher psychological discomfort than men.
