This paper presents methods and data sources for the 3D reconstruction of abandoned landscapes. It includes a detailed overview of archival maps and aerial photographs that can be used for researching landscape change.
The article also presents a method for creating 3D models using the freely downloadable Google Sketchup software. The graphic section portrays the resulting computer reconstruction of the deserted village Padrť in the Brdy military training area.
The combination of historical data and modern computer methods presents a realistic view of the history of a given landscape. Using these attractive and useful technologies we can link historical and geographical knowledge with computer skills.
