Students' books can be considered as a frequent tool of communication between school and family. Their graphics and ways of using are framed by both official and unofficial discourse about school evaluation and about school-family relationship.
The paper presents the results of qualitative analysis of students' books from twenty elementary and grammar schools in Czech Republic. The main concern is to describe and understand the form of communication through students' books (f.e. volume of details, parents' signatures, critical comments etc.) and what it says about the family-school relationship in general (f.e. power constellation and strategies).
