Accidental hypothermia after snow burial: how to treat an extricated patient?

Abstract

The aim of this work is to summarize principles of care for patients with hypothermia after being completely buried with snow due to recent guidelines, and to point key moments of decision-making concerning continuation or termination of resuscitation efforts. The last mission of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service Hradec Kralove in an avalanche accident in the Giant Mountains is reported. 36-year-old woman after avalanche burial was extricated with a cardiac arrest, but air pocket present.

Her tympanically measured body temperature was 15.9 °C.
