Diabetes mellitus is chronic, metabolic disease with several eye complications (diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic cataract). Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in individuals between the ages of 20 and 65 years in industrial countries.
The basic condition for maintenance good visual acuity is good compensation of diabetes mellitus, blood pressure and lipidaemia. The principle treatment of diabetic retinopathy is still laser photocoagulation.
Vitrectomy is considered in patients with complicated proliferative diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema. The new method is intravitreal aplication anti-VEGF antibodies and corticosteroids.
