Diagnostic methods in allergology

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen |
2012

Abstract

Allergy diagnosis developed rapidly in the last decades. However, targeted and carefully collected history remains the basis of allergy examination.

Besides traditionally used skin tests (skin prick tests, patch tests), some new methods were introduced (atopy patch test). Laboratory techniques have developed substantially, being dominated by the examination of specific IgE antibodies.

The availability of examination increased significantly together with its increased quality and, additionally, some new techniques (multiplex methods, using of recombinant allergens) were added. The most important asthma tests (spirometry, bronchial challenge, bronchodilation test) are now more available and examination of exhaled nitrogen oxide (FENO) was added.

However, the diagnostic procedure should be managed by experienced and educated allergist.
