Spectral slope parameters and detection of word stress

Publication at Faculty of Arts |

Abstract

The study deals with the principles of relative prominence in speech and tires to bridge theoretical phonetics with applied science. The questions of the relevant factors of perceptual prominence is tested experimentaly with a newly designed software tool that measures the spectral balance of sonorous nuclei of syllables.

We propose a new paradigm of quantifying spectral slope and demonstrate how it distinguishes stressed and unstressed syllables regardless their position in the word.
