Abstract
This contribution aims to show, on the basis of Lévinas interpretation of a short excerpt from the Talmudic tract Makot, how much Lévinas thought reflects the particular understanding of paideia encountered in the old Testament, as well as the new Testament, where upbringing is understood as a bitter activity connected with whipping and other bodily punishments.
