Antipsychotics and Venous Thromboembolism

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2008

Abstract

Antipsychotics have been detected as a risk factor for cardiovascular, metabolic or endocrine disorders. Treatment with antipsychotics is also associated with an increased risk for venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism.

This association was not yet evidenced by double-blind trials. A lot of risk factors are related to induction of venous thromboembolism.

The risk is the highest in the first three months of treatment. That is why it is necessary to consider this kind of adverse event especially at the beginning of the therapy.
