In the Czech Republic, Czech as a foreign language is taught in the English study programs at medical colleges. Its aim is to prepare foreign students for their clinical classes in hospitals, classes in which they will communicate with patients exclusively in Czech. The author of this article introduces the socio-cultural competences connected with the sociological, psychological and ethical needs of doctor-patient communication.

Based upon the above-mentioned competences, she suggests certain concrete linguistic means which should be used in teaching Czech at medical colleges.
