Inhibitors of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), including low molecular weight inhibitor erlotinib and gefitinib, have been demonstrated to be active antitumor agents in patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma and head and neck carcinomas. Increased concentrations of urinary neopterin, and indicator of systemic immune activation, have also been reported in patients with lung carcinoma and head and neck carcinomas.
