Abstract

The aim of the present study was to test classical (statins) and atypical (bisphosphonates) cholesterol-lowering drugs for possible effects on blood acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase and brain AChE activities with respect to their blood-brain barrier permeability. We conclude that cholesterol-lowering drugs may inhibit AChE activity in brain providing they penetrate blood-brain barrier.
