Abstract
This brief review systematically classifies and thoroughly itemizes individual types of adenohypophyseal adenomas according to various criteria or their combinations: These comprise clinically apparent endocrine activity or an inactive secretion status, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics as well as the electron microscopic structures. The growth rate and invasiveness of pituitary adenomas are in relation to certain ultrastructural and cytochemical features.
