Key element in mate research is whether preferences are consistent with actual mate choice. P.
Todd and his team studied this issue by speed-dating method. Speed-dating is based on consequent meeting with several individuals of desired sex.
Analysis of reported mate preferences did not correlate with traits reported by the chosen partners. Male choice was primarily influenced by female physical attractiveness and female choice by more complex criteria as suitability for a relationship (i.e. willingness to invest, likeability, liking children etc.).
Moreover, male participants were less choosy than female ones.
