The book presents an insight into the history of moral theology written in Czech language. It is the first publication discussing the Czech moral theology between the years 1884 (the book on moral theology by Jan Nepomuk Stárek published) and 1948 (the beginning of the communist rule).
The development of the Czech theology was disrupted by the Communist totality, practically no theological books were published during the period and theologians were silenced by force. After the fall of Communism in 1989 nobody is interested in the pre-communistic theological past any more.
We have never had a chance to face the pre-Vatican II period and ask to what extent it was right in its basic methodology, in its evaluation of the evolution of the society and in the way of looking for solutions to its growing ethical problems. The "old times" are forgotten, the sources of the new theological thinking are sought abroad, but in reality the "old times" are still alive in the oral religious tradition.
