Sawirus of Ashmunain : The First Arabic Creed

Publication at Catholic Theological Faculty |
2011

Abstract

Sawirus (Severus), bishop of Ashmunain, used his Arabic literacy for explaining the Christian traditions to his fellow believers, who had lost understanding of the Coptic liturgy and faith and were on the verge of mass conversion. Attempting at reconstruction of Christian life within the flourishing Islamic society he proposed catechesis in Arabic: teaching the Copts their own history and their own faith in the language of their times.
