Parental care in invertebrate animals

Publication at Faculty of Education |
2012

Abstract

Parental care can be defined as an investment of the parent in an individual offspring that increases the offspring''s changes of surviving. The basic forms of parental care in invertebates (arthropods) are presented with examples (eggs are laid to hidden places, eggs are laid directly on the food substrate suitable for the emerging young, maternal / paternal / biparental care of eggs and larvae) in this paper.

Parasitoidism and brood parasitism are also mentioned. Maternal care prevails within the complex of parental care in invertebrates.

Some mentioned species of invertebrates seem to be well suited for demonstration of parental care in the course of school educational field tips.
