In this chapter, I track the fate of the critique of ideology in/by art. First, I present the basic mindframe, which informs this critique.
I then discuss the content and history of the notion of ideology and its relationship with aesthetic theory, especially its Marxist version. I end by introducing two thinkers, Terry Eagleton and Jacques Rancière, who represent two competing approaches to the topic of ideology and art: Eagleton continues in the steps of the Marxist ideology critique, whereas Rancière develops a critique of this critique.
