Czech Ugly Katka as a Heroine of a Utopian capitalism

Abstract

The chapter reviews the analysis of the television serial Ošklivka Katka. It presents Czech version of a global format as an example of "glocalisation" television practise and untangles how the post-socialist culture impacted on the adaptation.

The analysis of "chains of equivalence" inspired by the discourse theory shows that the global chain of equivalence which connects poverty-good heart-ugliness is systematically articulated with the socialist past in the Czech adaptation.
