The article discusses gender archetypes in Ladislav Klima's Sufferings of Prince Sternenhoch by means of archetypal analysis applied to the main female protagonist - Helga. The analysis focuses on the witch archetype primarily and problematizes its reference to essentialism.
The article demonstrates that within the historical context in which Klima wrote, his work was by no means tendentious, yet his character Helga was not situated beyond the stereotypical image of a woman as a mother-destroyer, femme fatale or a Fury.
