Certification as a viable quality assurance mechanism: theory and suggestive evidence

Abstract

We have built a model which illustrates how, and under what conditions, an independent certifier might mitigate the principal-agent problem in fundraising. Our results seem to rationalize the stylized facts of certification systems that we have identified
