Abstract

The article aims to map the conceptual field surrounding the aesthetic appreciaton of gardens. In the first step reasons why gardens are not considered works of art anymore is being inquired into.

These considerations are followed up with a discussion if at least the art-model of aesthetic appreciation is applicable in case of gardens. The answer being negative the author ponder over the model of aesthetic appreciation of natural object.

The result being as insatisfactory as in the case of the art-model the author arrives at a conclusion that the desired theory should avoid reducing the aesthetic appreciaton of gardens at either art or nature and maintain its specificity. It should combine both of the classic models.

In concluding remarks the author argues against the type of combination which puts together art and nature in a purely mechanical fashion and expresses an assumption that the model we are seeking for could shed some light on certain aspects of an aesthetic experience in general.
