Abstract

This contribution to the history of charity and religious thought in nineteenth century America presents arguments about the decisive influence of Unitarian thought on the field of the philanthropy and social reforms. The contribution opens with a short introduction presenting the issues of Unitarian theology, the repressiveness of the controversial period, and a growth in desire for practical reforms.
