Abstract

The process of residential suburbanization separates the place of residence from other daily functions within metropolitan regions. As a consequence demand for transport infrastructure and intensity of traffic have increased, on the other hand, individuals' time losses have arisen by increasing time spent in transport.

The article focuses on suburban teenagers who in the contrary to theirs parents are not able to use car and become mostly dependent on public transport and their needs of using urban functions and activity space correspond the least with the characteristics of suburbia. The paper assesses daily mobility and activities of suburban students compared to the people attending same schools and living within the city using Prague city region as an example.

The research is based on time budgets completed by students of secondary schools in November 2009 and data on time use collected by Median Company. The main finding which is discussed further shows that longer time spent in transport reduces suburban students' time for sleeping and leisure activities.

Besides the influence of schools and home localization in daily life of teenagers, differences in time use between students of secondary schools and the overall population of teenagers in Prague occur as a result of greater commuting distance on the one hand and more difficult type of study on the other hand.
