Abstract

Expression for the two-point paraxial travel time in wavefront orthonormal coordinates in laterally varying, anisotropic or isotropic layered media is derived. The wavefront orthonormal coordinate system can be used alternatively to the Cartesian coordinate system, with dynamic ray tracing performed in ray-centred coordinates, described in an accompanying paper Cerveny, Iversen and Psencik (2012).

It is proved that use of each coordinate system yields the same results, although they have quite different forms.
