Politeness strategies

Abstract

The presented work deals with communicative and politeness strategies chosen by Czech native speakers. The method of the research was a questionnaire; data collected in 2003 and 2011 were compared.

Several situations (forms of addressing, thanks, apologies) were presented to the informants, their task was to write down a spontaneous reaction. The results were analysed from different points of view, quantification (percentage) was used to illustrate the development of the strategies used in both years.

In relation to Hofstede's dimensional model several observations were made about strategy choice in relation to power distance index, individualism, competition and risk avoidance.
