STS: Possibility and limits of anthropology in laboratory

Publication |
2012

Abstract

Science and technology studies (STS) became relevant partner for other disciplines when it comes to understanding the days we are living in. The ethnographical approach to the research subject often used by STS could be understood as the invitation for an anthropologist to take part in.

But what are the results we are obtaining from today's STS? By analyzing two older works concerning biotechnologies by Paul Rabinow and Tereza Stockelova I am trying to show that there is a common approach that could be described as preventive distrust nevertheless the two works are based on different theoretical background - Paul Rabinow is inspired by Michel Foucault's study of power from ethical point of view and Tereza Stockelova is influenced by political Actor Network Theory by Bruno Latour. Based on this comparison I assume that this distrust often leads to the baseless objections.

The future visions of scientific progress are often trying to show today's bioscience as potentially dangerous or revolutionary (biosociality), but that could be after some time often rejected as indemonstrable.
