Detection of Terrain Skeleton Lines Based on Laser Scanning Data

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2012

Abstract

Possibilities of automatic deriving of terrain skeleton lines from gridded digital elevation models (DEM). Focus is put especially on the terrain break lines.

Theoretical approach, considering terrain to be a function of two variables, is discussed. Contemporary algorithms for skeleton lines computation are summarised briefly.

Design of own methodology, based on DEM decomposition to the profiles, in which outstanding points and discontinuities are found, is described in detail. This suggested procedure is applied to DEMs created from airborne laser scanning data, acquired during the new altimetric survey of the whole area of the Czech Republic.

Evaluation of achieved results in different terrain types and discussion of their real usability.
