Fullerene models C60 or Football ball in chemistry teaching

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2012

Abstract

The fullerenes are recently-discovered allotropes of carbon which seem to be perspective nanomaterials. Chemistry teachers should be able to illustrate the structure of these molecules to their students, preferably in 3D.

Therefore, three different models of the most widely known fullerene C60 usable in chemistry class at secondary schools will be presented and compared. The first one is a computer model (made by computer programme ChemSketch).

The second one is a three-dimensional ball and sticks model (made from students' building sets). And the last one is a three-dimensional paper model.
