Comparison of extremity of precipitation in the upper Elbe river basine

Abstract

The study deals with dependencies between temporal and spatial distribution of heavy precipitation and their extremities (return period of precipitation) in the upper Elbe basin to the gauging station Němčice. Rainfall episodes were described by SAD (severity-area-duration) curves, which express the relationship between extremity of precipitation and affected area, respectively accumulation time of precipitation.

Using the SAD curves were compared selected cases of heavy rainfall in the upper Elbe basin in the second half of the 20th century (for example July 1958, August 1964, July 1997 and July 1998). One- to four-days return periods of precipitation have always been confronted.

Based on the SAD curves, the envelope curves were identified. They determine maximal extremities of precipitation for an area and their duration.
