Abstract

Taiwanese Oolong tea is phenomenon of the nineteenth century almost as well as Coca-Cola is of the twentieth. It was a drink that changed history.

Great Britain was the nineteenth century' s leading power and the British were obsessed with new and fashionable drink: the tea. Tea consumption grew steadily, which created a demand for the new tea plantations.

Taiwan has a great natural condition for tea cultivation therefore the island became a target of merchants and trading companies. A completely new brand of tea, the Oolong tea, was bred in Taiwan in the 1860s and became quickly amazingly popular.

Production was increased by almost 9 000 percent just within two decades and was the second most sold tea brand in the United States of America.
