Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2012

Abstract

The lecture aims at better understanding of different aspects of some goddesses worshipped in Aegean area in Bronze Age. Several elements are taken into consideration - their attributes, accompanying animals, means of transportation, appearing symbols and their supposed domain.

The crucial part deals with the possibility of comparing these goddesses with their counterparts known by name from Iron Age Greece and Bronze/Iron Age Orient. Some names of divinities preserved in Linear B script are taken into consideration as well.

The main focus of the lecture is to point out the exitence of different female divine beings with their different aspects that coexisted in Minoan and Mycenaean pantheon. These differences are by no means apparent and therefore some repeating patterns of depiction need to be pointed out.

Secondly, what can we say about the importance of these goddesses?
