Abstract
Anatomical and functional development of thyroid gland in fetus and neonate are influenced by maternal iodine supplementation, maternal thyroid disease and premature birth. Transient hypothyroxinemia of prematurity can moderate other neonatal diseases, but its connection with future development of the newborn is not clear.
Thyroxin substitution therapy is recommended in proved sick euthyroid syndrome, but not in case of transient hypothyroxinemia.
