Abstract

As an actor noun, the Old Czech participial form věřící is attested in several meanings: 'Christian', 'creditor', and 'trusting buyer'. This paper explores their history as attested in the Old Czech dictionary archive.

The primary motivating factors in establishing these meanings appear to come from three general sources: (i) the semantic and pragmatic context in which the form was used, (ii) syntagmatic preferences, and (iii) genre-related support for opening inferences that can lead to particular interpretations.
