The samples of Gd64Co26Al9Y1 metallic glass were prepared by splat technique from the high purity elements. The glassy state of the samples was confirmed by the X-ray analysis.
Their ferromagnetic ordering with the Curie temperature T-C = 108 K was identified from temperature dependence of magnetization and confirmed by AC-susceptibility measurement. Electrical conductivity of the glass increases with increasing temperature and exhibits a pronounced peak at T-C.
The magnetocaloric effect was studied by heat capacity and magnetization isotherms measurements. Magnetic entropy change Delta S = -9.3 J kg(-1) K-1 was derived for a field span of 5 T.
The adiabatic temperature change was measured directly in a field span of 4.7 T. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V.
