Abstract
The present paper introduces a descriptive overview of the structure N1 de N2 in French and aims at outlining a classification that can be used to explain its different uses. Ascribing the function of the head noun to one of the N, two main classes have to be distinguished.
In the first one, the head of the structure is represented by the N2, which is considered to be less standard, and the N1 serves to quantify, qualify or identify the N2. In the second one, where N1 is the head noun, the difference between noun phrases and nominal compounds is pointed out.
Consequently, as a result of the problems with delimitation of these two, a considerable class of intermediate cases arises, the deeper analysis of which will be necessary.
