Abstract

Systemic sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory systemic disease of connective tissue and small blood vessels characterized by skin thickening with visceral organ involvement. The incidence is estimated at 5-10 cases/million per year.

Women are far more often affected than men. Etiology is unknown, but influence of hormonal changes, environmental and genetic factors is evident.
