Abstract
Legitimacy of the European Union is indirect. Indirect legitimacy views the legitimacy of the EU as domestically or nationally authorised by the popular authority of Member States rather than the European citizens.
This view sees the legitimisation of the EU arising out of an agreement between Member States as well as permission from the citizens of these states to participate in the Union.
